Replacing a missing tooth is critical to recapturing a complete smile and optimal oral health. Dental implants are the preferred choice for tooth replacement, as they offer many advantages over other options like bridges and dentures. If you are seeking exceptional dental implant care in or around Woodbury, Minn., turn to Dr. Avi Matha and the team at Tamarack Hills Family Dentistry. At our practice, we are committed to providing top notch treatment and reliable solutions to your dental care needs.
Implants are unparalleled in terms of strength and stability. An implant has a titanium post or screw that is placed in your natural jawbone beneath the gap left by the missing tooth. The titanium fixture actually becomes part of your natural bone’s anatomy over time, creating a sturdy base for your replacement tooth or set of teeth. As part of this structure, your implant post keeps the bone stimulated so it won’t deteriorate. And with a stable foundation, the replacement tooth or teeth won’t shift or slip around in your mouth.
With the stability of dental implants, you can bite and chew normally and enjoy all of your favorite foods. Because implants do not rely on the surrounding teeth for support, those teeth won’t weaken or wear down due to pressure from the implant.
Implants are also very versatile: you may opt to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or a full upper and/or lower set of teeth. If you require a full arch replacement, the All-on-4 system may be the perfect solution for your needs. All-on-4 is a full set of teeth attached to four implant posts; the implant posts and teeth can be placed on the same day.
Dr. Matha will walk you through the process of getting a dental implant step by step. In general, he will begin by evaluating the state of your oral health and planning out your implant treatment.
Once Dr. Matha has a custom treatment plan for you, the implant post is placed in your jawbone. It takes a few months for the implant post to integrate with your jawbone, but during this time, Dr. Matha can place a temporary crown over the implant post.
After your implant post and jawbone have healed, Dr. Matha will remove the temporary crown and place a custom restoration atop the implant post. The crown should match the color, shape and size of your other teeth for a flawless result. Dr. Matha can make any last-minute adjustments to improve the fit or feel of your implant and crown.
Unlike other tooth replacement options such as dentures, dental implants do not require any special care or cleaning products. You should brush and floss around your implant every day, and have your implant checked by Dr. Matha every six months. Occasionally the dental crown mounted to the implant post may need to be repaired or replaced, but the post itself should last a lifetime.
